Music

Pure improvisation for three days & three nights...

Not too long after The Calx Project was over, I took on a project worthy of a record of its own: listening to all 60 hours of recorded improvisations with the goal of creating a two-disc set.

As I listened to the improvised music, I gave the recordings working titles based on images they created in my mind or things that were going on while I was performing them. The amount of material to choose from was huge.

Instead of presenting tracks in a simple chronological order, I ultimately opted for creating a CD that gave a listener the possibility to experience the Calx Project across time.

You'll therefore find a very interesting selection of music:

  • Pieces that go from quiet and intimate to thunderous & passionate...
  • Tracks that last just a few minutes all the way to full 20+ minute bricks of pure, 100% improvisation (these are my personal favorites since they really "throw" you in the raw impromptu experience)...
  • Selections that capture the ambiance of the beautiful Galleria Alberto Sordi - including the violent storm that leaked through the glass roof, the the reverb of the piano sound in the huge halls at night and the lively noise of thousands of people passing thru...
  • Recordings of some of the main musical ideas that returned now & again and became "official" Calx Project themes...
  • Music being performed with one hand, an odd track where the piano strings were being plucked and pieces improvised & inspired by people & things I saw in the huge crowds...
  • The final 10-second countdown from the audience as I was approaching the 60th hour...
  • And much more!

It's a music collection that's highly recommended for the music lover: listening to "invisible" music being created on the spot that was captured in a physical medium is quite cool.

Of course, you'll hear some "soundos" (the equivalent of grammatical 'typos') which are inevitable, but they add (in my opinion) charm & taste to a very peculiar recording. Plus the live recordings were digitally remastered for industry-level sound quality.

Last but not least, I added my notes that describe what was going on while playing each track you hear... It's a really interesting point of view that came from my memories of the event PLUS the audio/video that I used when screening all the music.

And now, take a moment to explore samples from all the tracks on the "Broken Record" double CD recordings here on the side! Enjoy the experience! And if you're interested in owning this collection, you can get an immediate download from the options below!
